Drinking Water – A Global Concern

Issues related to drinking water and municipal water systems are all over the news these days.

In North America, the troubles that Flint, Michigan has faced with its water supply and distribution system have been in the headlines for a number of years now. Government officials continue to struggle to replace aging infrastructure and rebuild the trust of citizens. In Wellington County, Ontario, local advocacy groups are fighting global water bottler Nestle over groundwater rights. The groups maintain that too much water is being extracted from the aquifer and drinking water supplies will be negatively affected.

Looking around the globe, we see other news stories that underline just how crucial a reliable municipal drinking water network is, and how bad things can get if the system breaks down. Here are a few noteworthy stories we’ve come across recently:

  • In what has become a national issue, the New Zealand Government is appealing to municipalities across the country to verify that they are meeting national drinking water standards. This comes after an official report found that up to 800,000 people are using water that is ‘not demonstrably safe’.
  • In South Africa, a drought has caused some cities to impose extreme water conservation measures. Starting in January, the city of Cape Town will restrict usage to 87.5 litres of municipal drinking water per person per day. City officials are promising strict enforcement and fines for anyone caught exceeding the limit.
  • Like Singapore, Ireland is considering using recycled waste water to supplement existing drinking water supplies. The country is creating a National Water Resources Plan and one of the options being considered is recycling treated effluent back into water reservoirs.
