Flexibility is the key to stability
[Series 4/7]

 

The genesis of LuminUltra was to construct an ATP-based test kit for quantifying biomass in wastewater treatment bioreactors.  This is where we focused our research efforts from the mid 90’s to the mid-2000’s, as well as the entirety of our commercial efforts from 2003-05.  Though we knew for certain that this would be a strong market for us in the long-term, it became apparent in those early years that the short-term gains would not be enough to support the company.

As such, we took an ultra-flexible ‘shotgun’ approach to evaluating markets for our products.  We first took it to the industrial water and drinking water sectors. Then, in 2007, we began exploring the oil & gas, metalworking, and fuel markets based on inbound contacts that inquired as to whether our products would work in these sectors – the answer to which was, “We’re not sure, but let’s find out”.  Paints, coatings, carbon black, ink, ballast water… you name it, we have tested it – and we’ve yet to come across a sample in which we could not measure ATP.  Here we are today, serving 3 vertical markets and countless applications for 3,000+ customers around the world.

Why is this important?  Because it demonstrates flexibility, and flexibility is extremely important in terms of identifying where one can provide value to the market.  We are very cognizant of the fact that we cannot help solve every problem, but we will definitely try, through providing flexible tools and by doing more listening than talking.  In that regard, we welcome your feedback at any time if you have suggestions for product improvement or new opportunities in existing or unexplored applications.

Pat has worked his entire adult life to bring LuminUltra to where it is today. When he is not jetting around the world providing hands-on support to LuminUltra’s extensive roster of sales partners and customers, he is constantly refining LuminUltra’s strategy to deliver more value from its solutions. Having come from a family of engineers, he is a consummate problem solver who has written dozens of technical papers, patents and other published works. In the rare circumstance that Pat is not focused on advancing LuminUltra, he volunteers his time on not-for-profit boards and entrepreneur coaching.
