The Ocean Conference: How the United Nations is addressing ocean health

Coming up June 5, 2017 in New York, the United Nations will bring together stakeholders from around the globe to discuss the health of the world’s oceans. The Ocean Conference will run for five days and will see delegates tackling a host of issues centered on Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

The conference will act as a forum for governments, scientists, financial institutions and others to come together to talk about real world initiatives that are already working to meet the aim of Sustainable Development Goal 14. Delegates will be looking to take this information and use it to build off current successes and even create new ocean health projects.

Far from a theoretical exercise, the conference sessions will put together the people who write and enforce regulations with researchers who identify problems in our oceans and private sector businesses that are seeking to develop ocean resources. From the conference, the UN hopes to develop a registry of voluntary commitments from attendees. These commitments, focused on Goal 14, will be a huge step in preventing damage to our ocean ecosystems.

Scheduled events at the conference will focus on topics like overfishing, land/ocean interactions (erosion and pollution control, for example) and sustainable business development. The conference program also coincides with World Ocean Day on June 8.
