The Story of Your Data

Data gathering and analysis have become crucial across many, if not all, sectors of our economy, including the water sector. If you consider all the components of data analysis you can start to see its potential to positively impact decision making.


The overall process of data gathering and analysis generally goes like this:


Data identification and collection

Whether the data you need is coming from a single source or multiple sources, whether it already exists within your organization or has to be gleaned from outside (competitors or government statistics, for example), the first step in using statistical data to support a decision is to find it.


Data processing

Sometimes called ‘wrangling’, this step involves recognizing that when data from multiple sources are blended together to create a single dataset, it doesn’t always come out in a coherent, usable form. Imagine needing to combine a text spreadsheet with GPS tracker data and the handwritten results of a customer survey for example.


Analysis and Modelling

Once the dataset has been built into something that is both accurate and workable, it can be used to answer questions. The nature of the questions that data can answer can either be historical or predictive. Questions like; ‘What caused the regulatory exceedances last month?’, ‘How much energy does each unit process use?’, or ’When during the day is there peak demand for water?’ are historical. Data analysis can also be incredibly powerful when it comes to looking ahead. By applying predictive analytical methods to datasets, relationship and correlations between different variables can be found. Wouldn’t it be valuable to be able to say that, ‘Based on the data studied, when X happens, 75% of the time Y will happen.’?


Visualization and Communication

Very rarely are the results of a mathematical equation the end of the story. Quite often the results of a data analysis project need to be shared with and explained to others. It might be operators, supervisors or managers, but whatever the case it’s important that data analysis results be easily understood for whoever is making decisions.
