Research conducted in collaboration with Vink Chemicals explores microbial management strategies in biodiesel blends
Fredericton, New Brunswick – September 9, 2026 – Luminultra is proud to announce that Applications Scientist Madison Tomlinson has been selected to receive the Chevron Research Award of Excellence in Honor of John Bacha from the International Association for Stability, Handling and Use of Liquid Fuels (IASH).
The award recognizes early-career researchers contributing to the advancement of liquid fuel science and is named in honor of John Bacha, a former Chevron consulting scientist internationally recognized for his work in diesel and residual fuel chemistry and his commitment to supporting the next generation of researchers.
Tomlinson received the award at the 19th IASH International Conference, taking place September 6–10, 2026 in Toulouse, France, where she will present her research, “Microbiology in Biofuel Systems: Microbial Risk and Management Strategies in Biodiesel Blends.”
Conducted in collaboration with Vink Chemicals, the study aimed to better understand how increasing biodiesel content in diesel fuel can influence microbial activity, the microbial communities that establish and the response to biocide treatment.

Tomlinson is an Applications Scientist specializing in microbial monitoring within the fuel industry. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology and a Master’s degree in Molecular Science, specializing in Molecular Bioscience. Through research, industry collaboration and technical education, her work focuses on understanding microbial contamination and translating complex microbial data into practical approaches to fuel quality management.
